In Britain we have 2 common types of wasp. The first is the Common wasp, the second is the German wasp and they are both identical to the naked eye. In Britain we also have an occasional visitor in the European wasp. These are larger and are more aggressive; however we have only ever found them nesting outside.

In the winter the queen wasps hibernate in all sorts of places, e.g. lofts, sheds, trees and anywhere that protects them from the winter weather. In springtime the queen wasp comes out of hibernation and searches for a suitable nest site. These can be in any place that the wasp can get entry to and from.

Nests are made from a mixture of wood and saliva, the wasp makes this mixture by cutting the wood with its strong jaws and when it is chewed, this mixture takes on a paper like appearance and texture. All of this work starts around June and finishes at the end of September. The colonies can contain anywhere from 100 to 10,000 and above - this will depend upon the availability of food and good weather.

Nests die out in the autumn after the new young queens are mated and leave the nest. They then go on to find places to hibernate. The nest they leave behind slowly dies out and is never used again.

The treatment of a wasp’s nest takes place by injecting insecticidal dust into the nest at any visible point. After the nest has been treated, any of the wasps that have been out feeding will come back to the nest. However, as they can sense the presence of the insecticide, they will not enter. Once the queen is dead the rest of the colony will all die off.

When we treat a nest all aspects of safety are taken very seriously and the appropriate personal protective clothing is worn. Ladders are supported properly and a full instruction of the situation is given to the customer, along with a full written report.
